Guides

Here are some general sizing guidelines for t-shirts, hoodies, crew neck, denim jeans, shorts and chino’s we carry.  Make sure and note when things are a baggy fit or tall fit and size upor down a size accordingly.  Our cloths are generally in US sizing

Skate shoes are designed to give skaters comfortable, durable footwear that offers added protection and stability while skating. Although one can skate with everyday shoes, these shoes can wear quickly and are usually not durable enough. Your normal everyday runner is not built to come in contact with grip tape, cement, and metal on a routine basis. They also do not allow the rider to feel the board and have adequate control of their feet when performing tricks. In addition, a skater should have good grip on the board, with extra cushioning in place to protect against hard landings. Consider things like the type of material used for the uppers and sole, the type of grip, and the reinforcement in the toe area, impact protection, level, and fit are also key features.  Choosing the right skateboarding shoes depends on a number of factors, including personal preference, needs, and budget.  No 2 skaters are the same as is the shoes that perform best for them, that’s why we have lot’s of brands and styles to choose.

Sizing

Measuring one’s feet will give a clear indication of the shoe size needed.   To find the length of the foot, place a heet of paper against a wall.  With your heel up against the wall, stand on the paper and mark the end of your big toe.  Do it for both feet.  Measure in a straight line from the heel to the line of your big toe.  Both feet should be measured this way, with shoe size being calculated from the measurements of the larger foot.  Take that measurement and consult the chart below.

So you have found the perfect snowboard, you love the look, the shape, the flex...you know it is perfect.  Now what size do you get?  Let’s just get to the point that there is no magic formula or web calculator you can punch your weight and height into and magically get the right size for every board.  Different shapes, different flex’s can have a huge effect on what size you need.  Weight is the key factor to start.  Height does come into it, say you may be 200cm tall but weigh 75kg, you will need something different than someone who is 75kg but 160cm.

Riding Style

If you still haven’t quite figured out the board length you like, the next thing to consider is the conditions you’ll be riding in and the type of riding you’ll be doing. If you’re going to mostly be riding in Australia , or you’re going to be spending most of your time lapping the terrain park, then you might want to downsize a few centimeters from what the general chart recommends for “freestyle.” Riding a shorter board increases maneuverability, reduces swing weight at the tip and tail so you can spin more quickly and smoothly, and limits your chances of clipping your nose when you’re ollieing onto rails.

Someone who is riding more overseas, bigger terrain, deeper snow and is looking for something that is faster and more for carving will probably want something a bit longer.  A bigger board is going to be more stable, have more surface area for better float.  A longer board will provide better drive and power at high speeds, create superior float in deep snow, and improve stability on rough terrain.  Also take into account the evolution of powder boards with new boards like the Yes 420 and Jones Storm Chaser that allow even the bigger rider’s to ride a super short board.

Riders who like to do a little bit of everything, from cruising the park and ripping down groomers to seeking powder stashes in the trees, will want to go with a board in the middle “all-mountain freestyle.” This will give you a board that’s long enough to stay on top of fresh snow and stable enough to handle high speeds, yet still small enough to use in the park without feeling bulky or unwieldy.

Foot Size Matter’s

Foot size is key as well.  Feet that are a U.S 11 and up need to make sure the waist width is appropriate. Generally as boards get longer the waist width increases as well.  Bigger feet riding normal width boards can end up dragging toes in the snow.  A little overhang is fine, so don’t panic if your boot is a little longer than your board is wide, but this is definitely something to keep in mind if you have a larger boot.

For The Ladies

Generally girl’s will ride shorter boards that more line-up with their body weight.  The general rules apply as above depending on what your style of riding is, height, weight.  Park and jib go shorter, powder and free ride go longer or all-mountain do it all...somewhere in the middle.  Foot size is also a big deal with lot’s of females having bigger feet these days, so make sure you get the right waist width.

Basic Chart

Take a look at this basic snowboard sizing chart.  This is a great general, on average way to get an idea of what size you will need.

So what is splitboarding?  Usually if you wanted to ride deep untracked pow away from the groomed slopes of a resort, you had to use your boots which is hardwork or snow shoes to travel to where you wanted to go. Our skier friends/telemarkers climbed much more quickly, used far less energy and subsequently enjoyed more runs each day out touring.  Riding untracked pow is a game changer, as with heli. Splitboarding enables you to access slopes that haven't been ridden, amazing terrain plus get away from the hustle of lift lines. There is nothing quite like...earning your turns!.  So what do you need to go splitboarding or access backcountry terrain?  You can get a pair of snowshoes and a pack plus walking poles and some will and determination or put togther a splitboard setup.  To do this you will need a splitboard, splitboard bindings, a puck set, splitboard skins, a backpack and poles to start.

Splitboards are usually a powder shaped snowboard that has been split down the middle to form ‘skis’ for the ascent.  The metal edges are on the inside for more control.  They have a set of clips towards the middle and at the tip and tail to attach them back together for the decend.  When choosing a Spliboard things like weight, foot size and height as well as terrain you are going to ride come into the decision just as when buying a normal board.  You want to generally ride a larger, more volumous board than you normally wood, especially for more backcountry orientated terraoin.  There are very cool shorter boards that have hit the market like the Jones Storm Chaser and Hovercraft Split that you can ride shorter, float like a much bigger board but are easy to carry around.

Splitboards bindings are a highend, lightweight binding that have features that help while touring and is your main connection to your splitboard. They have slider tracks on the bottom that connect to the puck which allow a quick and easy transition from touring to riding.  These bindings usually have a feature called climbing bars, they raise your heel up so that your foot is more level to the slope, which translates into easier and more efficient skinning.

Spiltboard skins make it all happen, arguably the most important item in the kit.  Climbing skins provide the traction necessary to tour uphill. They are designed to easily slide in one direction (uphill) and grabs in the opposite direction (downhill). The tiny hairs are called the skin’s “plush” which grip the snow and provide impressive traction up the mountain. Skins are strips of adhesive-backed fabric with tiny hairs pointing towards the tail of your splitboard. The hairs of the skins allow easy glide forward but prevent the board from sliding backwards in tour mode. Climbing skins attach to the board with adhesive glue, tip clips, and sometimes tail clips. Most skins are trim to fit, meaning that you have to cut both edges of the skin to match the sidecut of the snowboard.

You’ll also need some other important gear.  Basic backcountry equipment like an avalanche beacon, shovel, probe are important.  Even light backcountry conditions can be dangerous.  Most importantly…the knowledge to use them is a must.  You can find lot’s of backcountry and avalanche training events throughout Australia and New Zealand.

You will notice on our website, when you are going to buy a skateboard we have lot’s of models, shapes and lots of sizes. The first thing you’ll notice when browsing our website is that there are tons of different sized skateboards. So how do you know what size skateboard to buy? What size skateboard is good for street skating? What size skateboard is good for a beginner?   Sizing is always in the eye of the rider, some people like to go bigger, some smaller.  You can buy skateboards as deck only and then build it yourself or for the first time or novice rider sometimes buying a complete is the easy way to go.  Shop Skateboards HERE

What size deck should you skate?

The skateboard deck is the actual board itself, the wood platform you are standing on.  When you buy a deck you need to add the trucks, wheels, bearings etc...build it youself.  A complete skateboard is a skateboard that is built and ready to ride right off the wall.  Skateboards vary in size but most are between 7″-11″, and are made of usually either eight or seven-ply wood, bamboo, resin, carbon fiber or plastic. Deciding which skateboard deck is best for you depends on your riding style and of course your brandand graphic preference.  there are a few things to consider...

Width – The average width of a skateboard deck is 7.5″- 8.25″. Width is influenced by the size of the rider, foot size and the type of riding you may be doing. Bigger riders and those skating ramps and vert ramps typically prefer a wider deck. Street skaters usually choose a smaller deck. Choose your skateboard deck according to the width, not length.

Length – The length of the skateboard is measured from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail. Average board length is 28″- 32″.

Wheelbase – The wheelbase is the distance from one pair of inner mounting holes to the other inner pair. The average wheelbase is 13″-15”.

Nose and Tail – The nose and tail of a skateboard can be hard to tell apart, but most decks provide you with graphics to distinguish the two apart. Also, most skateboard decks have a bigger kick on the nose and mellower kick on the tail.  Tip: You can buy mounting harware that is colored to help tell fron from back apart.

Mounting Holes – Mounting holes are pre-drilled holes where the skateboard trucks are attached. Arranged as two sets of four holes; one set is near the nose, the other near the tail.

Ply – When looking at the side of the skateboard deck, thin layers of maple veneer are visible. Layering the wood in a cross-grain pattern creates a stronger board than a single solid piece of wood. The typical skateboard is seven-ply.

Different brands have tendency to have certain size and shape characteristics, you will find a brand that work’s for you.

What are the different sizes of skateboard decks?

From small to big when sizing up a board these are just general guidelines.  We always tend to go a bit bigger for kids to account for growth, you want some life out of it.  Below is a general guideline...

Micro Deck width: 6.5″ – 6.75” – Deck length: 27.2” – 27.6” – For skaters 5 years or younger, under 3’5” tall who wear a size 3 shoe or smaller

Mini Deck width: 7.0″ – Deck length: 28”  – For skaters 6 to 8 years old between 3’5” and 4’4” tall who wear size 4-6 shoes

Mid-size Deck width: 7.3” – Deck length: 29” – For skaters 9 to 12 years old between 4’5” and 5’2” tall who wear size 7-8 shoes

Decks 7.5” or larger Deck width: 7.5″+ – Deck length: 29”+ – For all skaters over age 13, taller than 5’3” with a shoe size of 9 and up.However, individual skating style will determine deck size for these decks:

7.5″ to 8″ – Standard board for adult riders skating streets or doing more technical tricks

8.0″ to 8.25″ – Skating pools, ramps and parks

8.25″ and larger – Vert, pools, cruising and just going old school

Longboarding is a version of a skateboard but it is usiually longer, usually has bigger wheels and wider trucks.  Snowboarders and surfers will love a longboard.  Longboards came about when surfers found downtime when the waves were lame, they would take a  piece of plywood and screw some wheels to the bottom and surf the concrete.  There are various longboard shapes, lengths, widths and flexes for different rides as well as different styles for cruising, freeriding and bombing hills.

Cruiser Longboards

The name pretty much stakes it’s claim! A cruiser board is a means of transportation and a perfect longboard for beginners or just anyone who wants to head out for a cruise down the beach, your local bike path or the pub on a Sunday avo. Some are shorter, designed to easily weave in and out of foot traffic, some are longer and more stable for some speed and hill bombs.

Deck Length – Boards can vary in length from approx 28″ – 46″.  This style of board is a great choice for lots of riders and technically can include all types of boards.  As long as it has 4 wheels you can cruise on it.  Longboards are different in that the length is almost complete preference. Again, shorter boards enable one to make shorter, quicker turns and longer boards are great for carving at high speeds. If you’re totally lost on what size to get just Contact Us Here

Shorter Cruising Boards – Lengths in the 28″ – 32″ – Perfect for cruisers, kids and everyone inbetween. Easy to carry around but usually have less turning ability.

Mid-Sized Cruising Board – Longboards in the range of 31″ – 42″ With a length between small and long, these boards are just right and can do almost anything.

Longer Cruising Board – Great for longer, relaxed rides, these boards are perfect for the sidewalk or cursing the boardwalk when the surf is flat.

Deck Flex – Flex is a pretty important component of a cursing longboard. The flex of the board will absorb some of the rough terrain, bumpy roads or tiny rocks. A flexy board also enables the rider to ride close to the ground, which can be quite fun and perfect for hands down 360s! This type of shock absorption will also help to relieve some of the stress on your knees and ankles. Making it easier to balance and push, riding lower to the ground adjusts your center of gravity. If you would like some flex, be sure to check out the weight range on the board.  On the other hand, a stiffer board will provide more stability. Such boards are popular for downhill longboards and are sort of the ‘original’ style of longboards. Once thing to consider is that newbies could find a very flexy board to be quite challenging to master from the start, so a stiffer board is likely the way to go!

Kicktail or No Kicktail – A kicktail is when the tail of the board is…kicked up a bit (think traditional skateboard shape)! Having a kicktail longboard can be very convenient when you need to make quick turns, do tricks, and pop up and down curbs. Beginners can go either way since they won’t be using a kicktail from the start. Boards without kicktails are able to maximize the effective wheelbase (distance from one axle to the other),which allows them to be a bit more stable for beginners. If you don’t think you’ll ever be turning or doing tricks with the help of a kicktail, then opt for no kicktail.

Freeriding

For all riders, freeriding involves riding down hills while doing technical maneuvers, longboard dancing or general cruising.

Deck Style – Boardslides, downhill, dancing or cruising, truthfully, any board can be set up for freeriding, but some decks are specifically designed for such a purpose. An ideal downhill deck will be longer than the average longboard brand and will be completely rigid for increased stability at higher speeds. There are two choices from here – drop through and drop platform.

Drop Through – Drop Through boards have a hole in the board where the truck goes through.  This drops the booard closer to the ground, brings your center of gravity down and can come in both a flexi and stiff deck.

Drop Platform – Drop platforms have a lowered platform on the drop platform (and double drop) decks gives riders an enhanced sense of stability. It makes initiating slides easier as well is very stable at higher speeds.  Some boards incorporate both drop through and drop platform tech, the best of both World’s.

Deck Dimensions – Anything in the 34″ – 42″ range will be perfect for freeride. Shorter will be unstable and longer will be too cumbersome. Don’t worry about the width since it will be proportional to the length.

Downhill Longboarding

Downhill longboarding involves riding at very high speeds and requires a lot of precision. Although it doesn’t look like they are going that fast.

Deck Style – For speed, stability and precision, the majority of pro longboards prefer a top mount deck, but we still sell and see lots of boards with a lower, more stable feeling that drop-through decks offer.  Longboard styles vary and are very individual it’s easy to customize your ideal ride for various types of riding!  Not sure, give us a call Contact Us Here

Drop Through – Have you ever had the wobbles when going fast down a hill? It’s pretty scary when your board seems to uncontrollably shake beneath your feet taking your legs with it. A drop through deck offers incredible stability since it sits lower to the ground offering the rider a more stable center of gravity. To mix things up a bit, a drop through deck can be mounted the “normal” way (underneath the deck as opposed on the sides of the deck) for a top mount ride. If you’re new to downhill racing, drop through is the way to go.

Top Mount – Like a traditional skateboard, top mount trucks attached to the bottom of the deck. This mounting style give the board more grip when speeding around turns. When sliding is necessary to slow down for tight corners,  a top-mount board will give better performance. Keep in mind, however, there are many skills to master before obtaining the benefits of a top mount board. Unless you’re a seasoned longboard who is comfortable riding at very high speeds, a drop though would be a wiser choice.

Deck Dimensions – For downhill, decks in the length range of 37-43″ will be ideal. A shorter deck will be unstable at high speeds while a longer deck will lack maneuverability. Oh the choices. Beginners should stick with longer setups until they are accustomed to bombing down hills. Still torn? Stick to something around 40-41” to be on the safe side. You can’t go wrong with that size range!
